Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about using Treechival to preserve and explore your family history.

How do I find myself on the tree?

Use the location button in the tree view controls (looks like a map pin icon). This will automatically center the tree on your profile if you're on the tree. You can also toggle the glow feature on or off — when enabled, a gentle glow appears behind your leaf to make your position easier to spot.

How do I add or delete family members?

Only users with editor permissions can add or delete family members. This protects the integrity of the family tree data. If you need to make changes, you can request editor access below.

How do I add or delete photos?

Only users with editor permissions can upload or delete photos in the family archive. This ensures that all media is properly curated and preserved. If you have photos to contribute, you can request editor access below.

Who can see my family tree?

Only authenticated family members can access the trees. After logging in through Cloudflare Zero Trust, you can view trees connected to your family name. Each tree has its own access controls, and only designated editors can make changes.

How do I edit someone's information?

Editor permissions are required to modify any family member's information (names, dates, relationships, etc.). This prevents accidental changes to important family data. Request editor access if you need to make corrections.

What are "tidbits" and "stories"?

Tidbits are fun, freeform facts about a family member (like "Loved fishing" or "Served in WWII"). Stories are AI-generated narratives based on the real details in the tree — birth, death, relationships, and life events. Both appear in the member details panel when you click on someone.

How do I tag people in photos?

When viewing a photo in the archive, you can tag family members if you have editor permissions. Tags help organize photos by person and make them appear in each member's photo gallery. Tagged photos show up when you view someone's profile on the tree.

How secure is my data?

Treechival uses enterprise-grade Cloudflare Zero Trust authentication. All data is stored securely on Cloudflare's global network with edge computing for fast, reliable access. Your family photos and data are never sold or shared with third parties — they belong to your family.

How do I report a mistake or suggest a change?

If you don't have editor permissions, use the "Need Help?" button (floating pill icon) on any tree page to submit corrections or suggestions. An editor will review and update the tree. You can also request full editor access if you'll be making multiple changes.

Can I export or download my family data?

Currently, there's no automated export feature, but all your data is stored securely and can be accessed anytime through the site. If you need a data export for backup or migration purposes, contact the site administrator for assistance.
